Devil Dog Martial Arts Kuntao Ranking

 

  • 3 Levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced)

  • There is no set time of completion for either. The curriculum starts off at a universal platform (beginner) and becomes individuated depending on the student’s effort/comprehension of the material (intermediate). 


 

  • BEGINNER:

    • basic/ core counter-offensive concepts of Kuntao 

    • students are introduced to ground-level concepts and techniques of the system, placing an emphasis on internalizing anatomical and geometric principles for fighting/self-protection

      • TOOLS:

        • Axial rotation, core strikes (2 elbows, 3 fist attacks, 2 checks, 1 knee, 2 kicks)

        • Stance(s): Fighting 3 (condensed/ elongated long bow)

        • Takedowns (spinal and cranial-manipulative)

        • Form/ Kata/ Juru: introductory sequence designed to introduce students to core movements of the system

      • CONCEPTS:

        • “The Triangle” angular engagement/ disruption of attack

        • Interior/Exterior combative implementation

        • Unconventional/ Conventional targeting (headhunting + and threat management)

        • Introductory Self-Protective concepts/ prioritization of combative intent

          • proximal control

          • “Disable to disengage” expansion/ contraction of strikes to close 

          • Legality: “What is appropriate” significance of combative responsibility/context/ “don’t do what you’re not willing to answer for” 

 

  • INTERMEDIATE:

    • Reached when student can successfully counter a series of attacks with varying levels of engagement and has memorized and perform the opening form smoothly 

    • Emphasis on fighting/dueling concepts with shared focus on stylistic implementation (styles, forms, etc.)

    • Students will be introduced to shared concepts (open-hand striking, grappling/ anti-grappling, pressure-based breaks, fighting from the ground, etc.) as well as set on their own path of combative self-discovery 

      • **considering introducing weapon work here as well, just trying to figure it out still in terms of “how”**

      • Introduction to “The Crawl”

        • TOOLS:

          • Open-handed striking (2 ridge hands, 2 palms, clapping, clawing/ hooking/ spearing/ finger strikes, saber/round kicking) 

          • Stances: Cat (to augment the Fighting 3/ Long Bow from The Beginner Level) 

          • Grappling/ Anti-Grappling: “Bind to Break/ Coil to Crush”

          • Individual Form/Kata/Juru

          • Grounded axial rotation 

          • **all of these are scaffolded from the material in The Beginner Level

          • CONCEPTS:

            • “Touch and Kill” immediate engagement and disabling of attack via striking and/ or grappling

            • Bridging between striking to grappling/ grappling to striking

            • Vital Target exposure and exploitation

            • Dueling concepts

            • Ground Counter-Offense Concepts

            • Combative Dishonesty (feinting/ setting traps/ misdirection, etc.) 

            • Aggression training

              • **all of these are adapted to the individual forms each students receive

- ADVANCED:

- Endgame level material/ reached when a student has learned at least 3 jurus/ forms/ kata and implement them successfully in self-protection and dueling contexts 

-          Must demonstrate the ability to instruct/assist beginners/ intermediate students with what they are learning 

- **if not introduced already, this is where students will learn knife/ blade 

      dueling concepts/ application**

  • ** if I implement the weapons curriculum, the student will have to show combative efficacy with these as well in a self-protection and maybe sparring scenario as well**

  • Student will learn a traditional weapon

  • Group and ground fighting/dueling

    • TOOLS:

      • timing-based/ dependent strikes (catch sweeps, spearing elbows, shoulder, hip, and headbutt)

      • CONCEPTS:

        • Ground and Ground Fighting-Oriented, but can be applied to upright fighting/ self-protection

        • “First is The Worst” immediacy of disablization/ destabilization of an attack
